Baul Singers
The Baul Singers belong to a particular sect of West Bengal in India. Minstrels of mysticism and religion, the Bauls expressed their thoughts and ideals in the form of a story told musically. More in trend worth the ballads in English, the Bauls moved from place to place and sang stories to the background music of the ‘ektara’, a stringed instrument played using the forefinger. Though, the number of Baul singers has restricted their songs to the language of Bengali, which is the mother tongue of the West Bengal, today thanks to the efforts of UNESCO, it has become known. The Baul singers have left a deep impact on the literature of Bengal, and enriched it further.
